As Jared Diamond so aptly illustrated in his work, “Guns, Germs and Steel” the development of the agricultural industry is key to a civilization’s success. The success of the United States as a country and a world superpower began with our ability to reliably produce food in sustainable quantities. This process, the production of goods by way of growing plants and raising animals, moved us from being nomadic hunter-gatherers, to settled, established citizens of a society.
The agricultural movement has provided this country with jobs, food, clothing and an increased knowledge about the world we live in. As of 2006, 36% of the world’s workers were employed in the agricultural sector. The world needs to respect the power that agriculture has in terms of creating sustainable communities and stable societies. In countries where there are limited natural resources, teaching and funding proper agricultural techniques is essential to the quality of life. Hunger can be used as a powerful weapon by the wrong types of leaders and in order to combat such dictatorship, the lessons of agriculture must be taught to those living in developing countries or those prone to instability.
