Whose Land is That?

On March 25, 2006, I connected just after dawn with a wide awake group of Israeli Jews and atheists to travel to the lower Galilee municipality of Sakhnin, an Arab village whose land continues to be stolen by the Israeli government.

Ronnie, from Canada moved to Israel with the desire to help build a civil society. She is a co-founder of Women in Black and active with Machsom Watch/women at the checkpoints who watch for and report on human rights abuse.

Ronnie and I both laughed when she told me, “A friend told me that I am so Left that if I ever gets to heaven I will probably argue with God that those in hell just didn’t get a fair deal.

“Religion is used as a cover, but it’s all about the land! It’s convenient to claim one is doing something for God but the laws are made to take the land. We don’t have settlers in Israel -the common name for illegal colonists in the West Bank-we just take it! First it is claimed to be for military reasons then it’ll become a park or agricultural land that the state has confiscated.

There are many different types of land titles in Thailand. This article will cover some of the land titles I have seen and know about here in Phuket while dealing with real estate here over the last seven years.

Sor Kor 1
A Sor Kor 1 was used a long time ago but still exists today in many places in Phuket and it Thailand. This type of title gives you the right to farm the land but not sell the land. It is very much like a right to use the land. I have heard this sometimes is also known at the possession right to use the land. Be careful buying land near this kind of land as it delays the Chanote making process by several months as I learned before because you need to get it approved by another local government office.

Por Bor Tor 5
Por Bor Tor 5 land is generally farm land or agricultural land and listing as having no owner at the local office. This kind of land has been built on in the past. It is very common here on the island here and around Phuket. The village chief is usually the Read the rest of this entry »

A link farm is a network of sites that link to other sites for the sole purpose of increasing link popularity. This is when a website gets hundreds of links to unrelated sites in exchange for reciprocal links. This is termed as spamming and any website who relates to link farms is penalized by removal from a search engine’s index.

Backgrounder on Link Farms

Link farms were originally developed by search engine optimizers to take advantage of the Inktomi search engine’s dependence on link popularity. It was targeted for manipulation with the use of link farms because of the fact that it was used by a number of independent but popular search engines. The most popular search engines during that time – Yahoo! also used Inktomi results as a supplement to its own directory search feature. Link farms facilitated the stabilization of listings for online business websites having few natural links from more stable sites.

Link popularity is used by most search engines to come up with a ranking order for search results. However, at the time link farms came to be, the Inktomi engine was maintaining two indexes. The primary index produced search results that are Read the rest of this entry »

Why is organic farming bad, if it is? We have been told that organic farming is good for our health. Proponents have trumpeted the message that organic farming is good for the environment. How could it possibly be bad?

It seems that, increasingly, life is being divided into traditional and alternative. Each side claims their methods to be better than the other’s. Each tries to win people to their side. Traditional schooling fights alternative schooling. Conventional medicine fights alternative medicine. Mainstream culture fights alternative subcultures.

Farming, too, is involved in a battle, conventional farming against organic farming. Environmentalists and those concerned with their health assure us that organic farming is preferable in many ways. But others argue that organic farming is bad.

Why is organic farming bad?

Research Results

In 2002, Swiss scientists at the Research Institute for Organic Agriculture published in “Scientist” a highly publicized study. Their study, which covered 21 years, compared four types of farming. Two of those types were organic farming. The other two types were conventional farming.

Reporters quickly stated that the study proved organic farming was more efficient. Organic farming’s advocates said the study showed that organic Read the rest of this entry »

Like any rural high school student and member of 4-H, I was eager to be the manager of my own farm. The idea of following my rural roots was something I’d always felt strongly about, however, today young farmers are faced with very complex business issues that must be addressed and the simplistic view of family farming vanishes. In days gone by, farmers could work their farms, produce a commodity, and support their families. Today, that situation has changed and it includes the farm being managed as a business.

Farmers are faced daily with functions that they once performed, that are now performed by others more skilled in farm management. For instance, with today’s technology, the farm organization and its operation must be considered when outsourcing farming functions. Whether directly related to farming or the management of the business functions, these aspects must be carefully organized from the inception of record keeping. Many farmers have the misguided notion of fulfilling all of the farm jobs themselves, sadly to find that it is increasingly difficult to manage the business aspects of a farm, turn a profit each season, and work the farm too.

As a result, Read the rest of this entry »

It will come as no surprise to those investing in land that achieving planning permission on a UK land site is where lies the most lucrative investment land returns, but there are other ways to make money from a land investment, writes Alex Way.

Where once English land ownership was the sole preserve of the Royal Family, the Lords of the Realm and sundry blue-blooded families, at the start of the 21st Century Britons lacking a traceable blood-line are increasingly buying land for either investment or commercial purposes. UK land ownership, whilst still concentrated in a small clique (the upper classes, property developers, farmers etc), is now in the national consciousness and is something to which many people aspire. This is unsurprising: ownership levels of property market assets in the UK have always been relatively high (vis-a-vis other northern European countries), and UK land values have soared in the last twenty years. Buying land in the UK is thus an eminently sensible activity.

As a very broad guide, UK land which is reclassified for residential development within the UK land planning framework rises tenfold in value (ie land with planning permission is worth ten times more than a Read the rest of this entry »
